Why Six Months Works in Australia

The Australian financial year starts on 1 July. That makes a 6-month calendar very practical: the July–December page is the first half of the financial year, and the January–June page is the second half.

It is also a good fit for school. Terms 1 and 2 are on the first page, and terms 3 and 4 on the second.

Two Versions

  • With public holidays: the national holidays and King’s Birthday dates are marked.
  • With week numbers: ISO week numbers, very useful for rosters. 2026 has 53 weeks.

What Is in Each Half of 2026?

January to June 2026

  • New Year’s Day (Thu 1 Jan)
  • Australia Day (Mon 26 Jan)
  • Good Friday (3 Apr) and Easter Monday (6 Apr)
  • Anzac Day (Sat 25 Apr)
  • King’s Birthday (Mon 8 June, most states)

July to December 2026

  • King’s Birthday (Mon 28 Sept, WA)
  • King’s Birthday (Mon 5 Oct, QLD)
  • Christmas Day (Fri 25 Dec)
  • Boxing Day (Sat 26 Dec, with an extra day on Mon 28 Dec in most states)

The second half is light on national holidays. If you live in NSW, SA or the ACT, add Labour Day on Monday 5 October. In Victoria, add Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November.
